Nutrition programme
Nutritional support before and after surgery to optimise weight, promote healing, reduce complications and support recovery.
Nutrition principles
- Adequate protein intake for tissue repair
- Weight optimisation before surgery when needed
- Hydration and fibre to prevent constipation
- Micronutrient support (vitamin C, zinc, iron)
- Avoiding excess alcohol and smoking
- Personalised plan by a nutrition specialist
Pre- and post-surgery
Before surgery, we focus on weight loss, protein repletion and correction of deficiencies. After surgery, we support wound healing with a high-protein, balanced diet and gradual return to normal eating.
For complex cases or patients with metabolic disease, a nutrition specialist is involved in the multidisciplinary team.
Protein matters
Protein is essential for collagen synthesis and wound healing. We advise patients to meet their protein targets before and after surgery, through diet or supplements when needed.
Constipation
Straining after abdominal surgery increases discomfort and can stress the repair. Fibre, hydration and, when needed, gentle laxatives help prevent constipation.
