Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about hernias, rectus diastasis, minimally invasive surgery and the patient journey at ErniaRoma.
How do I book a consultation?
You can call 328 004 3173 or email info@erniaroma.it. We will reply to arrange a specialist assessment at one of our Rome locations.
Do you also treat rectus diastasis?
Yes. We treat rectus diastasis with minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic, robotic and hybrid approaches when indicated.
What is miSAR®?
miSAR® is a minimally invasive technique for reconstructing the midline of the abdominal wall. It is applied especially in rectus diastasis and associated midline defects.
Can every patient be treated with minimally invasive surgery?
Most can, but the indication depends on hernia type, defect size, presence of diastasis, previous surgery and general medical conditions.
Is rectus diastasis only an aesthetic problem?
No. Diastasis can have functional consequences, especially when associated with hernias, pain, abdominal wall instability, back pain or pelvic symptoms.
Is an ultrasound performed during the consultation?
Yes, during the first visit Dr. Maria Giulia Lolli performs a complete ultrasound scan of the abdominal wall.
How can I tell if I have a hernia?
The most common sign is a localised bulge, often in the groin, navel or over a surgical scar, that increases with exertion and reduces when lying down. Diagnosis must be confirmed by a surgical consultation and, if needed, ultrasound.
Can a hernia heal on its own?
No. A hernia does not close spontaneously. It may remain stable for a while, but the wall defect tends to persist and enlarge.
When does a hernia become urgent?
When it becomes very painful, hard, non-reducible, or is associated with nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension or inability to pass stool. In these cases you should seek urgent medical advice.
What is the difference between a hernia and an incisional hernia?
A hernia can occur at any point of weakness in the abdominal wall. An incisional hernia (laparocele) is a hernia that develops at a previous surgical scar.
Is mesh always needed for hernia repair?
In most adults mesh is used to reinforce the wall and reduce the risk of recurrence.
Is minimally invasive surgery always possible for hernias?
It can be indicated in most cases, but not all. The choice between open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery depends on the hernia type and the specialist assessment.
What is TAPP for inguinal hernia?
TAPP is a laparoscopic technique that repairs the inguinal hernia from inside the abdomen, placing a mesh in the preperitoneal space.
What is eTEP?
eTEP is a minimally invasive extraperitoneal technique for repairing some abdominal wall hernias, creating a working space behind the rectus muscles and placing a mesh in a deep plane.
Where is the mesh placed in eTEP?
The mesh is placed in a retromuscular or extraperitoneal plane, behind the rectus muscles and outside the peritoneal cavity.
What is component separation?
Component separation is a surgical technique that mobilises the layers of the abdominal wall to allow closure of large defects without excessive tension.
What is loss of domain in a hernia?
Loss of domain means that a significant portion of the abdominal contents remains permanently outside the abdominal cavity, within the hernia sac.
When does diastasis need plastic surgery input?
When there is excess skin, significant skin laxity, extensive stretch marks or the need for abdominoplasty. In these cases plastic surgery can complete the aesthetic outcome.
Does diastasis surgery require rehabilitation?
Yes, an abdominal-pelvic rehabilitation programme is usually started from the second postoperative month.
How long does recovery take after inguinal hernia repair?
Walking and light activities resume early. Sport and heavy lifting require a more gradual and personalised return, depending on the operation and the patient's work.
