Component separation

Advanced abdominal wall reconstruction for large or recurrent incisional hernias where the defect cannot be closed with simple mesh repair.

Indications

  • Large incisional hernia with loss of domain
  • Recurrent hernia after previous mesh repair
  • Defects where the rectus muscles are too far apart
  • Need for complex abdominal wall reconstruction

Planning

A CT scan of the abdomen is essential to define the defect size, the amount of contents outside the cavity, the muscle anatomy and the best reconstructive strategy.

Component separation can be performed open or, in selected cases, with minimally invasive assistance. It is often combined with mesh reinforcement.

Recovery

Recovery after component separation is gradual. Drain management, wound care, nutrition support and progressive rehabilitation are part of the standard pathway.

Outcomes

The goal is to restore the integrity of the abdominal wall, protect the viscera, improve function and reduce the risk of recurrence. Patient selection and surgical experience are crucial.
