Open surgery
Open hernia repair
A direct, reliable technique for inguinal, umbilical and other abdominal wall hernias, often performed under local or general anaesthesia.
What the operation involves
- Anaesthesia (local, regional or general)
- Incision over the hernia defect
- Reduction of hernia contents and dissection of the sac
- Mesh placement or suture repair
- Layered closure of the wound
- Postoperative monitoring and discharge
Benefits
- No need for general anaesthesia in selected cases
- Direct visualisation of the hernia defect
- Day surgery for most simple repairs
- Well-established technique with long-term outcome data
Duration
From 30 to 60 minutes for simple repairs, longer for complex or recurrent hernias.
Recovery
Patients walk soon after surgery. Discharge is usually the same day. A follow-up is scheduled to check the wound and discuss the return to work and sport.
